Joyce Banda, President of Malawi, continues to amaze as a Champion of liberty and human rights. This time she takes on the The Christians, who are still at it once again, spreading their caustic brand of vitriolic evil and hurting innocent people. Banda recently suspended the arrests of homosexuals in Malawi and looks set to repeal anti homosexual laws.
As Atheists and humanists we should care? The answer is Yes. Firstly an injury to ones person's human rights is an injury to all and once you let inhumanity lose on any group, who will be next muslims, jews, whites, shangaans, pygmies, old women, albinos? But there is a more fundamental reason why we should be offended. Simply put – we are all homosexuals.
As I write this I can hear them - “Blah, Blah Genuflect” - go all the fundamentalists flipping through their grubby ancient texts looking for ordained punishments that can be handed out to alpha male supporters of homosexual rights. Sadly any further explanation I now make will simply go unheeded by creationists because it clashes with the multiple times mistranslated interpretation of some two thousand year old Aramaic scribes, filtered through a thousand years of medieval prejudice. Nevertheless for those who are capable of following the basics of evolutionary biology, etymology and genetics, here is why Homosexuals are Natural:
Homosexual are present in ALL large scale mammalian populations, and as evolutionists know these kinds of trends are not by error, but are usually indicative of a species survival mechanism. The important aspect to understand is that Homosexuality in humans is not a social construct or decree of the Devil. It is as prevalent in kangaroos as it is in humans and even more so in more polygamous populations likes seals or antelope. Homosexuality is an important aspect of the survival and success of our species!
Genetic studies that compare inheritance trees of Mitochondrial vs Y Chromosome DNA come to the clear conclusion that Women are more likely to get their genes through to the next generation than men. This has not been as intensely studied in other mammals, but it is likely to be true of most mammal species. Simply put, it is not an equal paring system. Multiple women choose to mate with superior males (yah for the winners) and this leaves a percentage of males not in the reproductive loop (oops) - fact.
The system of unequal pairing is going to lead to a lot of fighting amongst the losers. We observe this in all mammals. The losers are moved towards the homosexual groupings. Without out homosexuality any large mammalian population can never stabilise, it will continually be at war with itself. A fluctuating proportion of the population is thus always homosexual. Historically the social construct is that humans have been able to develop this energy into armies that attack other armies rather than attack their own society. Homosexuality is historically paired to soldiers.
Genetics tell us that evolutionary information is carried in the genetic code. The tendency to homosexuality must be carried though in all of us as the genes can have no knowledge of who will and who will not be eligible for reproduction. There is only one genetic code for all humans, so this is information must be carried through in females too. There can't be one code for women and one code for men, this is why men have nipples and women have clitorises (homologus organs). The information that carries homosexuality from one generation to another and carries it across all successful species, is an entirely natural and integral part of who we are.
So there you have it, homosexuals are the mechanism that keeps the population group stable while still allowing the alpha males to get more than their fair share and allows females to pick the best genes that they require. So why are alpha males so angry and aggressive towards homosexuals? Beats me. We should be thankful we don't have to keep looking over our shoulders every time we pass groups of guys in the street. The good book must carry a large part of the blame.
So why this rise in Homophobia in African states? Why this belief that whites brought homosexuality to Africa? This interpretation is a wishful ignorance of history. As I explained earlier, homosexuality is often associated with males excluded from the reproductive process. This is often associated with soldiers – fighters. When the first missionaries arrived in Natal, at the kraal of Africa's greatest warrior king, Shaka Zulu, they were surprised to find that he had young boys in near proximity and openly fondled their genitals.
The transformation to intolerance and the position that homosexuality was “never practiced in Africa” is a fallacy perpetuated by the remarkable uptake of Christianity and the extinction of free thought in Africa. It is in fact Christianity that had no following in pre colonial Africa. And the evil of interpreting colonial texts to the disbenefit of natural Africans has no place in our future. Humanist across the continent must rise up against this evil force. Inhuman treatment of consenting adults has no place amongst us. Homosexuality is the current battleground, but the war is for the mind of the African people.
