Marking Criteria

Understand the targets that you have to achieve

The total Mathematics Mark is out of  400
School  Based Assessment 100
Paper 1  150
Paper 2 150

Doing you school assignments and tests are important.  The Prelim exams are particularly important - they count 30% of the SBA or 7.5% of your total final mark.

A student gets 60% for her School Based Assessment including the Prelim Mark. She wants to achieve a final total distinction mark of 80%. To be safe, she targets a final mark of 85%.

(a) What overall average must she get for Paper 1 and Paper 2  in order to get 85% for her final total mark?

(b) She does not want to cut it too fine. She knows that Geometry is her strong point. What mark must she get for Paper 2  Geometry  if she expects to get  80% for her final Paper 1 Algebra to achieve an overall mark of 85%?

(c) Say she is 8 weeks before the final exam for Paper 1. She knows that the more exam practice she does,  the better she gets. In the real world, time for maths is limited. If she currently gets 74% on the Copeman Academy scoring for exams, how much must she improve each week to ensure she gets a  mark of 90% for the final Paper 1 Exam?

Answer

(a)

Paper 1 and Paper 2 each count 150 marks. SBA of 60% counts 100 Marks

Let x be the average mark for Paper 1 and Paper 2

The target mark out of 400 is 85% of 400 = 340

Therefore

60 + (150 + 150) x  =  340

                    300 x = 340 - 60

                          x = 280/300

                          x = 93,3%

THIS SHOWS YOU WHY  A BAD SCHOOL BASED ASSESSMENT WILL PUT YOU UNDER PRESSURE IN THE FINALS.

(b)

Let x be the  % mark for Paper 2

The target mark out of 400 is 85% of 400 = 340

We expect to  get 80% for Paper 1 or 120 out of 150

120 + 150  x + 60 =  340

                  150 x = 160

                        x = 160/150

                        x = 107%

SHE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE AN 85% FINAL MARK.

At this point she enters the netherworld where her whole future life can be determined by the outcome of a single question mistakenly incorrectly answered. Do not assume that you can pass mathematics with distinction without a full knowledge of BOTH PAPERS

(c)

She must improve 2% per week

76-78-80-82-84-86-88-90

This is the minimum that she must improve to stay in the safe zone.

She must also be planned to achieve her target in Paper 2.
